City Administrator search toddles along

At the last workshop meeting (11/19), MT Schneider announced that there would be a workshop meeting on Tuesday, December 4 where the sole topic would be the hiring of a City Administrator.

Before this was announced Owensby asked if anyone can apply for the job. Of course, anyone--qualified or not--is welcome to apply for any job in America. Whether they should be given due consideration is another story.

However, the most distressing thing was Ol' Empty promising that ALL candidates/applicants will be reviewed by the ENTIRE council.

What?!

1. What is the point of E-W Gateway?
Are we not engaging their services to do the preliminary legwork and weed through all the nonsense, unqualified candidates.

2. What is our guarantee that the process will be apolitical if our entire council gets to vett all applicants?

3. What is to stop a completely unqualified candidate (ala Frank Munsch) from being considered?

4. What is to stop each and every one of us from applying for the job?

Nothing. It is a job. They may hire anyone. Given EWGW's position in the region, they are better able to serve as a clearing house between those looking for work and municipalities needing to hire. They get better national class candidates. That is all.

The current City Manager issue in Overland is another outstanding example of the unquestionable fact that politics and administration cannot be separated regardless of institutional structure.

An apolitical process, or administration is an ideal-type, or utopian construct similar to scientific-management and socialism.

The effectiveness of any administration is solely dependent on the nature of the underlying electoral politics. Formal rules will reflect the informal political norms. Owensby and his ilk are anarchic, foolish, greedy and dishonest; therefore, the administration of Overland's municipal government will be anarchic, foolish, greedy and dishonest.

The lack of compromise and consensus is not due to any short sidedness of our polity, it is fundamental to those we have chosen to represent us.

"But I'm in the dark about merit-based employment policies. Either you're jesting, or on far more interesting meds than I."

I am on more interesting meds Fido and I am sorry to hear you are in the dark on a merit-based employment policy.

Here is one of those achievement test examples.

Merit is to East-West Gateway as patronage is to ____________?

The Agenda is now posted online.

I am not sure what is up with three guest speakers. It is as if Ol' Empty doesn't realize that purpose and benefits of workshop meetings. Now, what could be a 40 minute meeting is stretched out to multiple hours.

My question is where is Overland Sailor? He has been absolutely quiet for so long.

No videos, no comments. He isn't posting anything anymore. I wonder what has happened to him and his drive to inform citizens?

Could it be that he's just not interested anymore? I hope not. I certainly hope he isn't abandoning his work at the behest of politico's in Overland. I hope the COGG didn't get his tongue too.
